Staying Healthy while Traveling

A cold is an ingredient no one wants to add to the post-vacation blues. Here are some tips on how to stay healthy while you explore the world!

Getting a good night’s sleep is crucial to a healthy immune system. It is important to prioritize sleep especially when fighting jet lag.

Regular fitness can help keep you well, so don’t give up your exercise habits on vacation!  Tips for practicing fitness while traveling include choosing a hotel with a gym, walking, or doing a quick 20 minute workout in your hotel room each day.

Eat your fruits and vegetables! Although for many indulging in local cuisine is an essential part of travel, be sure to add fruits and vegetables if they are not ingredients in your meal. Try and eat foods with zinc such as squash, greens, and cranberries. Vitamin C is a known immune booster and is found in greens, bell peppers, and citrus fruits. Vitamin E is an essential antioxidant found in sunflower seeds, almonds, and Brazil nuts. Say yes to garlic and onions (but maybe bring a mint) and perhaps pass on seconds of sugary or fatty options

Drinking water helps to maintain the function of your heart, brain, and muscles. It is a good idea to bring a refillable water bottle with you when you travel and remain hydrated throughout the day.

You may have thought to bring a first-aid kit, but what about a small med kit? Bringing your own medications with you on your next trip may just be the way to go. Instead of buying a brand you are not used to, stick with what you know! Here is a list of ideas for medicine to bring with you in your travel kit:

•          Ibuprofen / Acetaminophen

•          Antacids

•          Antihistamines

•          Bacitracin

•          Hydrocortisone

•          Cold Remedy

•          Loperamide
